Create a Parent-Child Form Relationship

Child forms in Axonator provide a powerful way to nest one form within another, reducing repetitive fields and streamlining data collection. This guide will walk you through the process of setting up and using child forms effectively.

Step-by-Step Process:

  1. Creating the Parent Form
    1. Navigate to the form builder at builder.axonator.com.
    2. Initiate a new form that will serve as your parent form (e.g., “Building Details”).
    3. Add all necessary fields to this form to capture the main data points.
  1. Creating the Child Form
    1. Start another new form in the form builder.
    2. Design this form to serve as your child form (e.g., “Floor Details”).
    3. Add all required fields to this child form, focusing on the repeatable data you need to collect.
  1. Adding the Child Form to the Parent Form
    1. Return to the parent form you created in step 1.
    2. Locate and add a child record field to the parent form’s canvas.
    3. In the properties panel on the right side of the screen, select the child record field.
    4. Find the “Child Form” dropdown in the properties section.
    5. From this dropdown, select the name of the child form you created in step 2.
    6. Save the parent form to apply these changes.
  1. Testing the Form

After saving your changes, it’s crucial to test the form thoroughly. Ensure that:
    1. The child form is correctly nested within the parent form.
    2. You can add multiple instances of the child form as needed.
    3. Data entered in both parent and child forms is saved correctly.

Example Use Case

Parent Form: Building Details
Child Form: Floor Details

Instead of creating separate fields for each floor’s information within the Building Details form, users can add multiple floor details using a single child form. This approach allows for more flexible data entry, especially when dealing with buildings that may have varying numbers of floors.

Key Benefits

  • Reduces form complexity by avoiding repetitive fields
  • Allows for dynamic data collection, accommodating varying amounts of similar data
  • Improves data organization and readability
  • Enhances efficiency in data entry and analysis

By following these steps, you can successfully implement child forms in Axonator, significantly improving your data collection efficiency and form organization. This method is particularly useful when dealing with repeating sets of information, providing a more streamlined and user-friendly approach to complex data gathering tasks.
